Someone was searching for a Form of Fire.

Bird-eyed, the wind watched.

Four deer in a blowsy meadow.

As though it were simply random, a stately stare.

 

What’s six and six and two and ten?

Time that my eye ached, my heart shook, why.

Mistaking lime for lemon.

Dressed in cobalt, charcoal, thistle—and control.

 

If they had more they would need less.

A proposal from the squinting logician.

Seems we are legal, seems we are ill.

Ponderous purpose, are you weather, are you wheel?

 

Gold with a heart of cinder.

Little blue chip dancing in the light of the loom.

Mistress, May-girl, whom will you kiss?

Bacteria can now produce gasoline

It isn’t a new concept, really. Scientists have been creating gasoline-like substances from genetically modified bacteria for years.

These organic creations have had some flaws, though. While they could be burned in a normal internal combustion engine, the differences between standard gas and the bacteria-created gas caused engines to prematurely gum up, making them imperfect gasoline replacements.

That’s all changed now as one John Love from the University of Exeter in the UK has created a strain of E. coli that can create gasoline that is “chemically and structurally identical to those found in commercial fuel,” according to a report in New Scientist.

We’re not against the government loaning our money to companies building expensive technology that eventually will trickle down to the mainstream. Ford and Nissan together have borrowed $7.3 billion from the same loan program to build alternative-fuel vehicles in the U.S., and if we’re to believe recent accounts, Tesla may record its first-ever profit this year.

What we are against, . . .the Department of Energy hasn’t explained why it continued funding Fisker for at least an additional year despite knowing the automaker was having trouble meeting its loan requirements. As to what extent “crony” political connections played in awarding Fisker’s $528 million loan in the first place, well, that’s the nature of our government and every big American business.

HAMPTONS RE BROKER: Two Wall Streeters Tried To Screw Us Out Of Commissions

A Hamptons real estate brokerage firm just got the ultimate revenge on a pair of Wall Streeters. [via Curbed]

Broker Rosehip Partners writes that Jon Terracciano, an attorney, and Jon Shechtman, a hedge fund portfolio manager, tried to cheat one of its agents out of earning a $3,000 commission fee for a summer share.

According to the brokerage, the pair were leaving handwritten notes in the homes telling the homeowners that they would like to do an all cash deal directly with the owner, while cutting out the agents.  Two homeowners found the notes and turned them over to Rosehip Partners, says the firm.

Michel Scheepens is familiar with risk. The 41-year-old oversees the energy market for the Dutch bank ING, and it's his job to determine whether his employer should finance such projects as a wind farm in Cyprus or a gas-fired power plant in Turkey. Until now, it was always other people's money that was involved.

For some time, however, Scheepens has been experiencing what a poor investment feels like on a personal level. Six years ago, the father of three bought half of a duplex for his family in the commuter town of Nieuw-Vennep, near the North Sea coast. The red brick building cost €430,000 ($552,000), but the bank generously offered him a loan of €500,000, so that there was enough money left over for renovations, along with notary and community fees. Scheepens had intended to resell the house after a few years, as is common in the Netherlands. But then prices tumbled following the Lehman bankruptcy. If the family were to sell the house today, it would have to pay the lender €60,000. His house is "onder water," as Scheepens says.

So when the global-warming movement came along, a lot of people wondered why he didn’t come along with it. The reason he’s a skeptic is simple, the 89-year-old Dyson said when I phoned him.

"I think any good scientist ought to be a skeptic," Dyson said.
"I just think they don’t understand the climate," he said of climatologists. "Their computer models are full of fudge factors."
